Go shorty! It's my birthday! We're gonna party like, it's my brithday!!!! I am so excited about my birthday that's approaching. Birthdays always make you look back, and evaluate whether your time and energy were well-spent over the past year. I have learned so much about myself and life. I have a clear idea of what I don't like, ....what I do like....what I don't want to do...and what I'm not gonna do. I feel like I've accomplished what I set out to do, and learned a tremendous amount from all of my job experiences.

For one, you can't always expect people to understand your dreams, or even really care. Whether they are people that love you or not, some dreams are so BIG that only God and yourself can emotional carry you on them, until they're completed. Some things are better kept to yourself, or a few trusted individuals. I've also come to the conclusion that I absolutley hate being an employee! No matter what company, or how sugary-sweet the position appears to be,....I will only be content with supporting my own brand full-time. Those are the facts, and that's everything that I'm pursuing at the moment.

Anyways, when you see me on Aug 9th, I will be in pure party mode. I have been working hard this year, so I deserve a break for one day :)

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS

Aw-w-w-w-w, April is here. It’s the beginning of spring, “real” sunshine, and warm, sultry weather. Spring represents growth, spanking new life, and fresh beginnings. Everyone deserves a second chance and a brand new start, not to mention the fabulous fashion this season! "Daisy dukes," tank tops, and flip-flops are all re-emerging from the depths of your forgotten closet spaces. Huge sunglasses, bright eye shadows, and big duffel bags are making serious comebacks, too.

As Easter approaches, we all recognize the importance of sacrifice in order to reach certain goals. Every girl I know is “getting back into shape” in preparation for her perfect beach pose. I too, have ambitions of fitting back into my $200- Agua Bendita (Agua de Arcoiris -Rainbow) swimsuit (pictured below, for your pleasure).

I’m equally excited about "springing forward" into new territory and expanding my portfolio of writing to several printed and online magazines. The chemistry degree has been a huge help in expanding my technical knowledge of cosmetics and beauty products, but I’m beyond ready to start the next chapter in my learning career. Lord knows it has been my dream, since high school, to attend a prestigious design program! I am proud to say that it will finally happen this summer. Yea!!!! Hip – hip- hooray!

The Case:

We have recently been informed that the Johnson Publishing Company is currently going through a financial crisis. The company is attempting a reorganization in order to survive. Many people have already lost their jobs with a company that has employed thousands of black Americans during the course of its existence.In order to support this effort to save our magazine, my friends and myself have pledged to get a subscription to both Ebony and Jet magazine, starting with one year. We are urging every other club member who comes across this plea to do the same. Please post, repost, and post again, to any blog that you may own or support.
Please email this to every person that you know, regardless of their background. Let them know that Ebony and Jet magazines have been part of the black American culture for three quarters of a century, and that there is a lot that they can learn about black American culture from reading them.We are currently discussing the idea of throwing an Ebony/Jet Party, where people can eat, drink, and sign up for their subscription on the spot. Please spread this idea around to all that you know. Your Sororities, Fraternities, Lodges, VFW Posts, Churches, Civic Groups, Block Clubs, Caps Meetings, Book Clubs, etc.It would be a crying shame, to lose our historic magazine, during the same year of such an historic event as the election of our first black President of the United States.

Today, Ebony enjoys a circulation of more than 1.4 million, while Jet reaches nearly 1 million people each week. But I suspect neither magazine is as ubiquitous in the homes of my generation of black folks (GenX) as they were for my parents and grandparents. The truth is, like many Civil Rights-era institutions, both publications began feeling irrelevant a long time ago. Yes, black people still need someplace to see their lives and culture reflected and to read news important to them. (Today's media is much better in covering people of color, but far from perfect.) But are Ebony and Jet the go-to places for that anymore? No, because while black America has changed over the last 60-some years, these publications have seemed largely the same--like museum pieces. I think of them fondly (like my grandparents' old recliner in the back room), but emphatically not as publications-of-record.

An example of Johnson Publishing's out-of-touchness? Sunday at the neighborhood Wal-Mart, I picked up a Jet for the first time in forever, in preparation for this post. I wanted to know if it was still there. In an age when black women are fighting stereotyped images of ourselves as Jezebels, playthings and acoutrement for the latest hip hop star whose cuts are banging in the whips of white, teenage suburbanites--it couldn't still be there. But, yeah, centerspread, there it was--that paean to black woman thickitude--the Jet Beauty of the Week, a young, black woman in a teeny swimsuit giving sexy face. Is this what I'm supposed to rush to the battlements to save?

The forefront of the black communications revolution is now on the Web, where brothers and sisters are breaking news (Jena 6), championing causes and serving up provocative opinions. Ebony and Jet, I think, have failed to keep pace with a world where there is
Ta-Nehisi Coates and What About Our Daughters and Racialicious and Aunt Jemima's Revenge and Womanist Musings and TransGriot and Something Within and Color of Change and Pam's House Blend and The Root and Black and Married with Kids, and, hell, Bossip. Today, black readers can get superior writing about politics, black life, marriage, parenting, sexuality, pop culture, identity, racism, sexism, spirituality, finance and a host of other issues, for free, everyday, all day, online. The topics covered (or not covered) by Ebony and Jet, the lack of depth in writing, the formats, the frickin beauty of the week, make these publications seem frozen in time, while the world speeds up around them.

Beyond all that, how is Johnson Publishing going to adjust to the new digital age? It's not the only print purveyor facing this question. Local newspapers across the country need to answer it too. America has changed the way it consumes information, and so far, print media hasn't found a profitable way to adapt. That's a shame, because we desperately need the Fourth Estate. We need in-depth reporting. Marginalized folks need these things more than most. God knows that black folks could use the shot to our collective self-esteem that Johnson Publishing's products offer. But taking extraordinary life-saving measures to rescue publications like Ebony and Jet is merely stalling the inevitable unless ailing publications put strategic plans in place to innovate and evolve.

Look, the older I get the more pieces of my past mean to me. (That's probably why I spent the weekend watching old episodes of "Columbo," "Quincy" and "MacMillan and Wife" on Netflix.) But nostalgia isn't enough reason for me to join the charge to save Ebony and Jet. All the Ebony/Jet parties in the world won't make a difference if these black cultural icons aren't making the changes necessary to save themselves.

Bronze Beauty

Contrary to belief, bronzers are not just for the pigment-challenged ladies anymore. These products can easily create an even skin tone and a sun-kissed, “summery” appearance for everyone. Through matte or shimmering hues of gold and red, you can grab a look of warmth and a “back-from the beach” glow in mere minutes.

Determine your Skin Type

It is important to choose a bronzer type that is right for you. Most come in the form of blush – powders, beads, creams, liquids, or lotion consistencies.

Cream-bases bring high-impact color and pigment to darker skin tones, but break down easily in oily skin types. Liquids would work best in this case. Try Prestige Summer Brilliance Luminous Liquid Bronzer with Moisturizing Orchid Flower Extract ($8, fine department stores). Mixing a powder -bronzer into your liquid foundation is another easy solution to enhancing the appearance of your natural skin hue, without looking as if you are wearing any makeup at all.

For bringing a natural glow to the dry – normal skin range, try a bronzing moisturizer or lotion, such as Neutrogena Summer Glow Daily Moisturizer ($ 8, drugstores), or Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel ($32, fine department stores).

Finding your Shade

The first thing to remember is to pick a bronzer that is right for your skin tone. Bronzers generally come in shades of light, medium, dark, or deep. To look sun-kissed, without appearing overly tanned, can become quite challenging. All bronzers have a true brown undertone. It can give a bruised or dirty appearance, if the wrong shade is chosen, especially if it is too dark. Seek a bronzer that is one to two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Try Mac Bronzering Powder ($18, fine department stores) in golden, bronze, or beyond-bronze shades, or I-Iman Bronzer ($27, drug stores) in the shades bronzer #1 or bronzer #2.
Application

The key to natural, believable bronzer is all in the application. Apply to three main areas of your face: cheeks, forehead and chin. Make sure to blend well, and disperse evenly with a big, blush brush. It is best to start off with a light application, as you slowly decide what looks best on your skin tone. You can always add more later, if desired, but a small amount can go a long way!

Using your bronzer as a blush can be easy, too. Compliment your cheeks by keeping your remaining makeup at a minimum, with simplistic, sheer lips and warm eyes.

1. What made you decide to join a fraternity?
2. How did you decide to become a member of APA (Alpha Phi Alpha)?
Aligning myself up with like-minded successful people.. Alpha has a history bigger than you think from MLK, Duke Ellington, Lynel Richie, Jesse Owens, Thurgood Marshall, etc... But it was the movers and shakers on my first campus at Xavier where I was turned onto the light! There the president, the dean, the SGA, everyone doing things were Alphas.. I expect to do things and I thought this should be great networking and being amongst similar magnets of influence!I came through the "GQ" ZM Chapter of GA State! It's not just a fashion.. It's a lifestyle!

3. What are some of the requirements of membership?
Requirements are having a good positive mentality, at solid GPA at least like a 3.2 or 3.3 somewhere in there.. but we expect higher!!
4. Do you have any regrets, regarding your membership or pledging process?
No regrets.. God lead my feet to places I go with a security in mind of the visions I've seen for myself! No fear! I just got to get it!
5. What is hazing, and did you ever feel that you were a victim or participant of the act? Please provide examples.
Hazing?? I beg your pardon! Alpha?? No!! No tolerance policy here ma’am..should I get beat to call someone a brother??
6. What are the good aspects of pledging APA? Specific examples?
Alpha Phi Alpha is an Incorporation! We run a business and have business meetings and we are proficient and teaches us life skills to running an organization effectively. You see the things we produce.. We expect only the best! It should show in your work! Character is what we look for.Some people pledge for the wrong reason and it will be obvious they will only make work harder on themselves.
7. What are the bad aspects of pledging APA? Specific examples?

I have no regrets about pledging. So I don't see bad aspects. But, some people like anyone have egos and you have to deal with them from time to time but if they joined for the right reasons then that should not be a issue.
10. Are you still an active member, after graduating from college? What are the differences between pledging during undergraduate studies, and graduate studies? If you could turn back time, would you pledge all over again?
Once you an Alpha you always an Alpha!!Active yes! paid member, no! Money is the key!I didn't come through grad chapter so I really don't know what they do!But they want money! I don't need to give money to an organization to be a servant to my people. I don't need to be frat to do that either! I joined because I like to be in good company! you can meet someone from a totally different area and you can befriend a brother instantly! It's an awesome organization! sometimes I wish the egos didn't get in the way of people working better together! but hey that's everywhere.hope I've been a help to you!!

3.0 gpa, good academic standing, 2 letters of recommendation [from brothers in the chapter], and completion of the members intake process.
4. Do you have any regrets, regarding your membership or pledging process?
NOOOOPE. :]
5. What is hazing, and did you ever feel that you were a victim or participant of the act? Please provide examples.
Hazing is when a person embarrasses, harasses, or injures another through the plight of a personal ambition. Ex: verbally, or physically harassing an interest to prove their worth.
6. What are the good aspects of pledging APA? Specific examples?
I believe that Alpha highlights aspects of scholastics, community service, and the strengthening of Black awareness. Ex: Project Alpha is a program dedicated towards educating adolescents in teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
7. What are the bad aspects of pledging APA? Specific examples?
I really can't say that it's nothing related to the fraternity itself. No society is a utopian society; however, problems do not stem from the fraternity itself.
8. How you ever thought of resigning as a member?
No, like marriage, Alpha is a life long commitment. Through thick and thin, one must make the best out of any situation, whether it's dismal or not.
9. Have you ever felt that you were pushed too far, in your pledging process?
No.
10. Are you still an active member, after graduating from college?
I’m still in college, but after I graduate, I plan on being a member
11. What are the differences between pledging during undergraduate studies, and graduate studies?
If anything, the social aspect. Undergraduate members receive a higher amount of social benefits from being in a fraternity, all of which are superficial in all honesty.
12. If you could turn back time, would you pledge all over again?
I would, so I could garnish the feeling of my neophyte show. It was amazing. But other than that, no.

1. What made you decide to join a fraternity?
-I was looking for people I could trust and who could trust me unconditionally. For the first time in my life, I found black men that didn’t fit or want to fit the stereotype of a black man (ie. constant slang usage, pants so baggy they are falling off your legs). I found black men like me.
2. How did you decide to become a member of APhiA (Alpha Phi Alpha)?
-I researched all the historically black greek fraternities to make sure I knew what they were all about first, and after reading through everyone’s collegiate, graduate and national websites, nobody could touch A Phi A in terms of community service, prominent alphas, and in terms of having a clear goal for the organization in the future.
3. What are some of the requirements of membership?
-GPA 2.5 is the minimum, but many have greater gpa's. -A desire to know more about the organization, its history, purpose, and the current brothers involved. -Application -Essay
4. Do you have any regrets, regarding your membership or pledging process?
-NO
5. What is hazing, and did you ever feel that you were a victim or participant of the act? Please provide examples.
Hazing is a ritualistic test and a task involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a gang, club, military organization or other group. I do not feel I was ever a victim of hazing. I do feel that I went through constructive conditioning that was necessary to the process. Those who are not greek will never be able to understand and those that are, will never be able to fully explain. But, I will say, that everything has a purpose and my process was a great learning tool I have taken with me. Not once did I ever feel like I was being abused or humiliated, To this day, I find it hard to walk on grass through a park, when there is a nice sidewalk surrounding the grass, after all, there are no shortcuts in life.
6. What are the good aspects of pledging APhiA? Specific examples?
-NEVER feeling alone -My line brother is my brother, he is apart of me. -Participating in these national service programs, was the first time I felt like I was contributing to society as a whole, no matter how small the contribution was. "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People": Get Registered to Vote today!!! We now see how important it is to vote, and that it truly means something.
7. What are the bad aspects of pledging APhiA? Specific examples?
-Not knowing when its over. Nights can be long "study" sessions. -It was hard to have a really good, flowing, bowel movement for quite some time. Bad aspect, but also one of the things that keeps you laughing...
8. How you ever thought of resigning as a member?
-ABSOLUTELY NOT. I worked too hard to earn my letters.
9. Have you ever felt that you were pushed too far, in your pledging process?
-No. EVERYTHING had meaning, and my DP and ADP made sure of that. -Did anyone ever ask Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, and company if they felt they were being tortured too much for being black and walking to class during 1906 in upstate New York at Cornell University? -In the end, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul!"
10. Are you still an active member, after graduating from college?
-No. I blame the economy. Also, I just moved to a new city, and need to find the right graduate chapter for me.
11. What are the differences between pledging during undergraduate studies, and graduate studies?
-I don’t know of any pledging when you enter as a graduate. I know you do learn what you need to learn, and you fill out plenty of paperwork...I think I will leave it at that.
12. if you could turn back time, would you pledge all over again?
-I would pledge again because of all I gained from it. I live with no regret. Everything is a learning experience. I would not change a thing. In fact, if I found out that there was no process, I wouldn't be nearly as interested, because I would want to go through what everyone before me went through. No skating here. I truly earned my letters, and may the good lord help the man or woman that ever tries to snatch them off me.

Mia, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorrority member

1. What made you decide to join a sorrority?
I decided to join a sorority for a number of reasons. One being that I wanted to belong to an outlet/organization that represented good morals, scholastic achievement, community service and a strong sisterhood.
2. How did you decide to become a member of AKA?
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Embodied all of the aspects that I was looking for in a sorority. Many of my female family members were already in the so rority. I felt that this specific sorority had something to offer me and help me develop as a college woman. Alpha Kappa Alpha has a strong history and background of sisterhood that I was seeking as well.
3. What are some of the requirements of membership?
The general requirement for undergraduate membership on the national website is a 2.5 GPA; although the GPA requirements differ from chapter to chapter. For instance, the chapter I was initiated into required a 2.75 GPA. Also you have to be enrolled in a four year college or university or have graduated from college, and you must attend an official rush.
4. Do you have any regrets, regarding your membership or pledging process?
Not at all.
5. What is hazing, and did=2 0you ever feel that you were a victim or participant of the act? Please provide examples.
Hazing is a series of ritualistic tasks that serve no purpose whatsoever. It often involves strenuous physical activities, harassment, humiliation, etc....to be initiated into a group. I have heard of physical hazing, mental hazing and financial hazing. I never felt that I was a victim of any hazing activities.
6. What are the good aspects of pledging AKA? Specific examples?
The term pledging has to be used carefully because people decipher it differently. I pledged to be a loyal and hardworking member for the sorority. But none of this involved hazing.
7. What are the bad aspects of pledging AKA? Specific examples?
I did not encounter any bad aspects of joining the sorority.
8. How you ever thought of resigning as a member?
No! I love the sorority and value my membership.
9. Have you ever felt that you were pushed too far, in your pledging process?

10. Are you still an active member, after graduating from college?
Yes I am. I just had to transfer my membership and join the chapter in my current city.
11. What are the differences between pledging during undergraduate studies, and graduate studies?
It’s true that it’s very different joining an undergrad chapter vs. a graduate chapter. On college campuses, Greek life is more magnified and sought after therefore joining undergrad is likely the more exciting option for most people due to the mainstream view or Greek life on college campuses. Also I feel that your exposure to your sorority sisters is greater in undergrad. I mean, you have classes with a lot of them, eat lunch on campus with them, study together, and many other activities that go along with college life whereas in the graduate chapter I’ve joined since graduating...I only see those sorority sisters at the monthly meeting and service projects, but not on a daily basis.

12. if you could turn back time, would you pledge all over again?
I would definitely do everything the same as I did the first time around and choose the same sorority, and I wouldn’t change it for anything!

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS

March is the month of all things green. Slogans like, “Take Care of Mother Earth”, or “ Protect the Trees” are heard all over the airways, and the television. Personally, it’s starting to become a little overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big advocate of taking care of the planet that we were left as caretakers of. We should take responsibility for the earth, because it is ours. Although I seriously doubt that people making minimum wage at McDonald’s, are worried or loosing sleep over - paper versus plastic bag options at the grocery store. For that matter, buying organic food or cleaning supplies from Whole Foods Market, versus the cheaper substitutes, is not a hard decision when placed in those shoes. I get annoyed after spending half of my pay check at Jewel’s (grocery of Chicago) , and they can’t even offer you any bags. Now, how am I supposed to get all that stuff to my car, and up 6 floors to my place?

When “poop hits the fans”, you’re only concerned about, “how will this decision affect my pockets, and any of my spare energy?” Can we really afford to save the environment in this economy, and pay bills this month? Do you really want to live in a green house with solar panels, and no AC? Think what you want to, but it’s not easy being green, while you’re still in the red (and your bank account).

Furthermore, the whole green garment philosophy really boggles my mind. And let’s be honest, truly eco-friendly clothing, means buying no new clothes at all. When you take all the energy that goes into laundering and washing into account, you’ve used large quantities of water, energy, and chemicals. Never mind dry- cleaned clothes! Cold washed and line dried methods are really the only way to alleviate the costs to the earth. Producing , constructing, and distributing a line of clothing, is the least bit of your worries. Longevity in fabrics, and button options are important too. Selecting clothing that you can wear for the next 20 years, and still looks as good as the day that you purchased it, is hard to do. Looking on the bright side of my Debbie – Downer moment (last 24 lines that you just read), I recently started saving cans and plastic bottles to reuse as part of my art exhibit. My art work turned out beautiful (of course), but the collection of rubbage used in it’s construction, started to smell funny after a few weeks. I even saw a few bugs- yuck.

Getting To Know Korto – Project Runway’s Season 5 - Fab Finalist

Fashion designer and stylist Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) is a proud wife, mother, and all around classy woman, who now goes frequently without being unnoticed as the fan favorite of Bravo’s hit reality show Project Runway Season 5. From her trademark hairdo, diverse line of clothing and apparel and sharp eye for cutting edge trends, Korto stands out easily from the rest and has captured the attention of many VIP’s in the fashion industry. What made you decide to try out for Project Runway, and did you ever imagine coming this far?

I've always wanted to try out for the show , from the very first episode. However, I just had a baby, so I knew I had to wait a little while before Ii could actually try out. My daughter is 4 now so I knew it was now or never. I always imagined that I'd be the winner, the first African American and the second woman to win. So being second wasn't so bad. You get over it, move on and keep on fulfilling our destiny. That’s life.

What were you doing for work, prior to the show? Would you ever move away from Arkansas?

I was actually a hair braider and designed part time. I also did odd jobs in photography and event planning. Arkansas is home for me, but like most of the homes I’ve had in my life, I know there will come a time for me to move on. But the state or the great people here, will always be close to my heart. My husband is originally from here, so we can't go too far, lol.3. I’ve heard that tryouts for Project Runway can be quite strenuous.

What were some of your biggest challenges before appearing on the TV screen?

The try outs for the show were really crazy. Some people were told to go home in the line in times square, where I auditioned. Some were given the chance to go in, but were pre-warned that they were not what they were looking for. I was really calm, I knew that GOD got me there. I was talented and nobody or nothing, they said was going to change those things. I was a designer that sold items, prior to the show, and I was just as good as anyone in that line.

The biggest challenge for me was leaving my child and my husband. It was the first time, since she was born, that we were ever apart that long. And not being able to talk to her daily, or make her understand what was going on, was going to be hard. I knew it was a sacrifice, and I had to do it or always wonder, what if?

How was “Ripping the Runway” with BET? How do you pick out your models? Are you interested in plus-size models, and what really constitutes the requirements?

Rip the runway was a great experience. I felt honored to be asked to be a part of that. It’s great when your own community embraces you. BET actually held auditions for the show the week of the event. Usually when i have a show, I have open auditions. What I look for- is a great walk, and a GOOD HUMBLE ATTITUDE; i don't do divas, lol.

As for height, tall is good, but I will pick a shorter model if she has all of the above. As for full figured models, I always have them representing in my shows. People usually want to see themselves in the models. Almost as if to say, “ wow, if she can wear it so can I.” To only see a size 2 on the runway, sometimes makes us all question if we can carry the designs on the runway. I really want people to feel great in my work, ….see themselves represented and that helps to build great self esteem.

How do you feel about the lack of African American, and Latino models on the runway? Do you see the fashion industry curing it’s melanin deficiency within the next 10 years?

It’s really sad that all of a sudden, we are not being casted. I always cast a mixture of girls and its important to have African American girls, as well as Latino, Asian, and Native American. All size ranges as well. The industry has been called out on it already, but there wasn't a huge change this season, so....nothing has really changed. It starts with the designer. Being African American, it should be our duty to cast girls that look like us, give them work, and show that they are just as beautiful and talented as our Caucasian counterparts. We’ll see what happens next season.

Which designers do you look up to, and aspire to be like?

Going into design, it always encouraged me to see the likes of Byron Lars and Tracy Reese in ebony magazine. They showed me that achieving my dream wasn't impossible. I love Valentino and Oscar Dela Renta as well, for their lengthy careers and the classic style they are known for.

What inspires your work, and what can we expect from your Summer collection? Which stores are distributing it, and will it be sold in Liberia?

My culture usually inspires me. I take a lot of influence from my roots. Fabrics and my environment also play a role in the process of design as well.

At such a young age, why did you and your family have to depart from Liberia?

There was a civil war in Liberia in 1990 and my dad worked for the government, so we were exiled once that happened. We actually had to leave all our possessions. My siblings and I were actually in school in Canada when it happened, so we moved to Canada permanently.

Are there any fashion design programs in West Africa? If so, which would you recommend?

I know in Liberia, we had a lot of tailors that were extremely talented. They would sew without patterns and do great work. I know that there are designers from Kenya, South Africa, and Senegal on the rise, right now.

Since Liberia is bordered by Sierra Leone, does the concept of conflict diamonds hit home for you?

Yes, Liberia is actually one of the countries that had blood diamonds, the media attention has helped with awareness.

As a result of being viewed by millions on the Bravo network, what perks or opportunities have come your away? Were there any opportunities that you declined on because of your moral integrity?

Well, now I am what you call famous without the riches, lol. I can't go anywhere without being recognized. The only perks, I would say, are that the door is open and I don't have to do a lot of knocking. Now people know who I am, and what I’m capable of. However, nothing is being handed to me . I still have to work hard for everything I have. I usually don't do anything with anyone that is controversial. I also keep a tight crew. I am very guarded with my personal life and family.

What are your biggest dreams, and do you feel like you’ve already achieved them?

My biggest dream is to get an investor to help get my clothing line out to the masses... lol. That’s really why I went on the show (project runway). Somewhere down the line, my goal is to have a lifestyle line of everything from home decor to stationary. I have achieved most of my personal goals, and I continue to go after my dreams, until my cup overflows.

There’s No Place like Obama-Land

I am a happy new resident of Chicago, the official Obama Land. I work on 820 Michigan Avenue, directly across from a hotel where our President frequently holds press releases and meetings. He even came to our building for a photo shoot in January! But since the 8th floor editors felt like hogging him for the entire time that he was allotted to be present, no one else got to meet him.

To make matters worst, …….during the beginning of his campaign in 2007, he made a pit stop to Tallahassee for a fundraising event. I was enrolled in classes at Famu for a short period after Hurricane Katrina, so I decided to skip a few of my morning classes to get a glance of Barack O. I waited for about 2 hours outside of the event location, and just as soon as I packed up and shuttled off in my silver cavalier back to campus….I received several joyous phone calls, about how I just missed B.O.. To say the least, I’m a little peeved. Why do I keep mis-encountering Mr. President? I know that it’s not your fault, President Obama. I’m sure that you would love to meet and shake the hand of every single one of your supporters, especially ME.

Our first lady, Michelle Obama, is everywhere, and I’m loving it too- from the cover of O magazine, to the New Yorker. First Tyra Banks, and now, Alicia Keys, is paying homage to Mrs. Obama. Imitation is truly the biggest form of flattery, and who could blame them?

Editor's Thoughts

February is the month of love. When I think of true love, I think of God, my parents, my family, friends, and my gifts. No matter whom I’m dating, my parents will always be my favorite and most dependable (laugh) valentines. Around this time, I can always expect a beautiful card in the shade of pink, mauve, or red, with caramel-chocolates, and cushy teddy bears packed inside a big box postmarked by the Hixons. I absolutely adore and admire my parent’s relationship. I can only hope for a valentine and a husband only ½ as wonderful as my pops, and I strive every day to be at least a portion of the woman that my mother is. They are truly spectacular- Black love at it’s best.

In addition, I am absolutely madly in love with, and cuckoo- nuts about art, music, cosmetics, and fashion. As a matter of fact, I’ve had a love affair with them as long as I can remember. My parents have always done a great job of investing and fostering the gifts of both my sister and I. I have always felt free to be myself, and to be the person that I was placed on this earth to be. Art, Beauty, Fashion, and Music- Call me cocky, but I consider myself extremely gifted in all of these areas, and I plan to use each and every one of my talents accordingly. When you know that you’re good, it’s owed to yourself to be a little ostentatious. And if you’re not confident in your own gifts, how do you really expect other people to believe in your dreams?

“ If you don’t use ‘em , you lose ‘em,” as I’ve heard many wise older people say. I know that our destinies are distinctly tied to our gifts, and that true happiness and joy can be found in making the best use of them. Life is way too short, to be unhappy. So a life chock-filled of purpose and love, is truly the only way to be fulfilled, and to really live.

It's the Fall 2009- fashion week, and I am disturbed by the abscense of brown faces on the runway. The fashion industry's melanin deficiency was noticed by Vogue magazine in last year's July issue, when they produced their very first all Black publication(...well, if you don't count the models in the ads). Although it was mainly released in Europe, the message was clear, and it's impact was heard all over the world. As the most wanted issue ever in history, it placed a significant stamp in the publishing industry. It's an official fact that African Americans will support and spend hard- earned dollars on products that support or represent us in a realistic, and aesthetically pleasing way. It's definitely a come- up for models of color, and hopefully a catalyst to a bigger representation of our community within more high-end brands. Since we definitely buy all the big-player NAMES- Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacob, Prada, Gucci, Fendi..., we should most certainly be seen in their ads and on their runways.

Although looking at most of Fashion Week's recent photos , I wonder if Vogue's hard efforts went in vain. It seems like they still don't get it. Nevertheless, we always rise above it, and conquer with time. So it won't be long, before there's more brown, cinnamon, butter pecan, and chocolate shades on the runway. I won't worry about it, as I continue to learn and focus on my jab in this industry, editing and creating my future clothing line. My Vogue issue still sits proudly on my coffee table, inspiring thousands of my whimsical sketches and bright fabric swatches...all reflections of me, my culture, and my community. Taking over the runway may take a little more time than we thought, but at least we already have the White House.

The Skorpion Show

My favorite YouTube show of the moment is “The Skorpion Show”. Two rambunctious characters, Skorpion (Kevin) and Makael, from the suburbs of Philly, give us our daily dose of celebrity gossip, political controversy, and family outbursts of –“ if I have to get up, it’s going to be trouble!” . The setting of the show is the Skorpion’s childhood home, where his mother and other daily guests make a pit stop through to voice their opinion, holler out to Beyonce, or just to make a dash to the kitchen for a snack. Skorpion’s honesty and down-home nature, has grown the attention of Britney Spears, Michelle Williams, and even mediatakeout.com. I must admit – during my first interview with Skorp and Makael, I was a bit star-struck ! I giggled and screamed like a little school- girl- teeny bopper. That let’s you know, that these guys have star power, and pizzazz! But I’ll let you figure that out for yourself:

Makael: You sound like my friend , Alicia

Well, Alicia must have a sexy voice.

Makael: I wouldn't say all that ! (Laugh)

How did you and Makael meet and become friends?

Skorpion: Well, Makael and I were friends on myspace for 2 years, and our nephews knew each other from modeling. I wrote a comment (on myspace) about Beyonce, and he would respond with a bad comment about Janet Jackson. So I invited him to come on the show, and it went from there.

What made you decide to host and create a show?

Skorp: Well, I never thought, "I'm gonna do a show on youtube." I recorded a grammy video about Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears, and that one video got about 25,000 views.

Skorp: Yeah, and I was reading the comments, and people said that I was funny, and that I should have my own show. I had a fake microphone in my hand, while I was doing my little commentary. People were loving what I was doing. I still wasn't convinced yet, that I should do my own show. It was just me going on youtube- singing songs, and acting a fool. Then I really started doing more and more videos, and people started subscribing....and it went from there.

That's very impressive! 25,000 views in your first video? Weren't you on Britney Spear's website at sometime?

Skorp: Yes! It was about the MTV special- Britney Spears for the record. One of the webmasters must have liked my video, b/c he posted it on their page.

WOW, what were you saying? Was it negative or positive about Britney?

Skorp: It was positive, b/c I looked at Britney Spears in a different way. I had my perception of her, and after watching the video, I really started to like her. She just wants to be normal so bad.

Makael were you on the Britney video too?
Skorpion : Makael? Makeal?
Makael? I think we lost him (laugh).
Skorpion: I know he didn't hang up! I'm gonna try to call him..oh wait, he's beeping in.

Okay (laugh)

Makael: Hello, ....hey I'm so sorry. I lost service at the place where I was at. I could hear you saying my name, and I'm like, "hello", why can't they here me? So now, I'm standing outside on the porch b/c I don't want to lose service anymore.

Is it cold there?

Makael: It's alright. It's barable.

Ok, b/c it's cold in chicago. it's about ....

Makael: Oh no, it's not Chicago weather. That's for sure. (laugh)

Well, as long as you're ok. I appreciate the extra-effort- going outside in the cold.....cuz uhhh .

Makael: Yeah, I'm so sorry.

It's ok. So makael, were you on the Britney video?
Makael: No, I wasn't on the Britney video.

Were you on the mediatakeout video? I think Skorp was mad about the Janet tour on that one.

Skorpion: (Laugh) I was very upset, b/c she kept cancelling her tours. She was playing with everybody's money and emotions. People were spending money...getting their nails done, hair done, buying outfits, and sneakers.....they go to the venue, and find out it's cancelled. Come on? You couldn't even make a statement yourself . It just made me upset.

I can understand that. Did you get money back?
Skorpion: I got money back, but not all of it. My ticket was expensive - $250.

Ooh, ya'll have the long paper in Philly. I need to be there then (laugh).

Skorpion : (Laugh) NO, it's not long paper......

Oh , yes it is.
Are you in college, and if so, what are you studying? How old are you guys?

Makael: No, I'm working. I'm.....well, I like to tell people that I'm 19.
Skorp: I'm not working or in school. 24

How do you decide and research your daily topics?
Makael: Ummm, usually if something big is going on......Kevin will call me, and I can research the internet all the day at work. Or vice versa, if I have a topic, I'll tell Kevin. Some people think that we're reading from a script, but we're not.
Skorp: I'll write my topics down ahead of time, but we pretty much go all over the place and spend as much time as we want on a topic. It's just like when any of your friends and you sit down and talk and gossip. That's what we do. We just do it in front of the camera. It's a lot of fun.
Well, I think a lot of it is y'all's personalities. What do you think draws such a large audience to your show?
Skorp: A lot of manipulation ( laugh) too....you have to have headlines that make people want to watch it. You add tags,and people find us when they're sometimes searching for something else. Like my recent Miley Cyrus videos.....
What do you think of the Miley Cyrus situation?
Skorp: What do you think, Makael? Makael? Makael? I'm gonna try to recall him.
Makael? I think we lost him again (laugh)
Makael: Hello...Kevin... my phone keeps going in and out...
Skorp: Well, we're talking about the Miley Cyrus thing and the squinty eye faces...
Makael: Yeah, I heard that part......I'm ready to throw this I- phone across the street! But I can't because this is the only phone that I have (laugh). Imagine if I was talking to Beyonce, I mean... (laugh)

I'm so sorry . Hopefully it won't happen while I'm in here..... I think that people are trying to capitalize on it, because there's an asain guy in the picture. When I saw it, I just that they were being goofy.
Skorp: I think it's silly. Anything that she does, they're gonna talk about it.
While we're on the celeb topic, do you think that Chris Brown really assaulted Rihanna?
Makael: Umm, I think both were wrong. It didn't just pop up in his head , ...to beat the crap out of this girl. I think he was antagonized and provoked, but I'm not saying that he was right. There are 2 sides to this story. People are jumping on Rihanna's band wagon, before anyone really knows the true story. It's really unfortunate......they're both really young, and a lot of young people go through stuff like this every day . Being in the spot light, makes it such big news. If it was me , no one would think twice about outting it in the newspaper or CNN.
Unfortunate that it happened, and I'm not taking anyone's side. I think that they both had some wrong doing...but I'm not sure whether we'll ever really know. Neither one of them is really coming out and saying anything.

I love being recognized in public. One time, I was taking out the trash, and some guy was like ,"You got the skorpion show, right? Yeah, I watch that." (laugh)
Tell us about your relationship with Michelle Williams. Is there anything about her that we don't know?
Umm, the things that she's talked to me about .....she doesn't expose to the media. I love her though! She's really talented..and it shouldn't just be about one group member, you know? Biggest selling female group of all time, and only 1 person gets the spotlight? It shouldn't be like that.
And Kelly has to learn to stop talking about Beyonce! When Beyonce has her interviews, she's seldom talking about them (laugh).
If you could fulfill your BIGGEST dreams, what would it be?

Chris Brown and Rihanna Drama

Okay, so when I first heard about the alleged assault…..I was shocked and couldn’t believe it. Matter of a fact, I still can’t believe it. Chris Brown was the ultimate sweet- guy with an all around- innocent appeal, that made most girls (and women!) want to swoon. He was, at the young age of 19 , emerging into an international pop/ R&B star, with paper-long endorsements from Milk, and Wrigley’s gum. I’m 25 years old, and I must admit that I had an extensive crush on the young whipper-snapper, and against my usual lime-wire incriminating habits, I went out and purchased his most recent cd. (and that rare occurrence has only happened for Beyonce, Jay-Z, Britney, and Kanye for the past 3 years).

As for Ms. Rhi- Rhi, she definitely needs to give her clothing and hair stylist an A+ on her progress report, along with a considerable pay raise, for her new bold hair cut and this out- of the- blue sense of fashion. Never mind whether she can sing, her image and her style has bolstered her to the top of the charts, with irresistible- head knobbing, body convulsing electro-tech beats of "Disturbia", and “Please Don’t Stop the Music”.

Both stars were easily on their way, in such a cute fairy-tale relationship, that most would only dream of having and then ………..I don’t know what happened. Regardless of what occurred, I still believe that many of Chris Brown’s fans will still love and support his music, regardless of his personal life and the accusations...... but a few of his female fans , in some strange way, may blame Rihanna for everything. As for his younger fans who need their parent’s approval and funds to make that purchase, Chris might run into a BIG problem there.

Rihanna’s fan base will probably continue to grow in support of her time of need. Most people want serious charges pressed against Chris, but this all depends on Ms. Rihanna, of course. Rightfully so, Chris will probably not get another album purchase from her fans, but has brought tremendous attention to the state of our country on domestic abuse and violence issues. It should be taken very seriously, whether your abuser is a man or a woman. If you're in an abusive relationship, you can call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) for help or someone to talk to.

Rihanna’s Assault Pictures Released

Oh my gosh! After seeing the newly released assault photos of Rihanna, all readers can totally disregard any sympathy felt towards Chris Brown in the previous article. One pop would have been somewhat defendable , considering that they were both throwing bows’, but he full on- opened a can of whoop, mixed with kyah! Then he bit her!

How do you bite someone? Unless you're really hungry and live in a small indigenous tribe, there really should be no reason for it. Plus, Mc Donald's is 3 blocks away from any location that you may be at. I can't believe that our little Chris did this. He should go ahead and start preparing his national PSA's, and dishing out the mullah( BIG TIME) to charities, and women's abuse centers. I'm still not sure whether anything, can fix his career after this, ......unless he does a gospel album. It always works for R. Kelly, when he's in a kiddie loving - legal bind. Most faithful church people ( God bless 'em!) will eat up anything stamped with Jesus, and remorse. They will go out and buy your album, give donations for your rehab treatment, and offer forgiveness. What else could you ask for?

Chris Brown is Even Crazier Than I Thought...as More of the Story Unfolds

MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that the detective who interviewed Rihanna after the assault had his notes leaked to the press. Here's how FOX 11 in Los Angeles is reporting it:

Rihanna read a three-page text message on Brown's phone from a woman. An argument ensued and Brown allegedly tried forcing Rihanna out of the car but couldn't because she was wearing her seat belt.

Brown then allegedly shoved Rihanna's head against the passenger window. When Rihanna turned to face him, Brown punched her, then continued punching her while driving. Blood spattered all over Rihanna's clothing and in the interior of the car. Her mouth was filled with blood.

Brown allegedly told Rihanna, "I'm going to beat the **** out of you when we get home. You wait and see." Rihanna called her assistant and left a message saying, "I am on my way home. Make sure the cops are there when I get there."

Brown then replied, "You just did the stupidest thing ever. I'm going to kill you."
According to the report, Brown continued to punch Rihanna, bit her on her ear, her fingers and put her in a headlock -- she almost lost consciousness.

Miley Cyrus and the “Silly Face” Pictures?

Miley Cyrus is silly and a lot of ridiculous! As a celebrity, it’s already understood that everything that you do is under a microscope. You are an example for thousands of fans, and viewers around the world. You can’t afford to make unscrupulous mistakes, because your image , career, and money are all on the line. So I can’t rap my mind around, why Miley Cyrus would think it was okay to make so called ,“silly faces”, that are offensive, and rude towards Asian Americans.

Since I was a kid, I have always known certain things that you just don’t do, ….unless you want to tick a whole bunch of people off. The “N” word is totally impermissible for any white person to think or say, never refer to Native Americans as Indians, and you definitely don’t make squinty stretched- eye faces, for the fun of it. Although I am extremely offended, I don’t think that she should be sued for 4 billion dollars (the current amount). Should she have her contract with Disney revoked or suspended? Yes. Should she make an apology? Absolutely.

Interview With Sam Fine - Part One

What do superstars Patti Labelle, Vanessa L. Williams, Halle Berry, Brandy and supermodels Tyra Banks, Veronica Webb, Iman and Naomi Campbell all have in common? They've relied on the expert hand of makeup artist Sam Fine to look their most glamorous.

I can tell that this is going to be a good interview already.

Thank you, I hope so. So Mr. Fine.....

Oh stop that, Sam......

Sam ( laugh), I’ve read that you started off as an artist and illustrator. So how did you get started in the beauty industry, and what peaked your interest onto the counter?

Well, I'm from chicago, ...the south side of chicago, and I've always been interested in art. I've always been artistic through out grammar school, high scool, and I even attended the art institute of chicago in the summer of my junior year. It was very exciting for me and helped me to understand that I really wanted a career within illustration . It wasn't until I moved to New York, b/c I wanted to go to Parsons, that I realized that I had a talent for makeup. I took a job at a cosmetic counter to make ends meet, and all my friends kept saying that, " You really have a good hand at this,..you should really give it a try,..this could be something else you do." I was a little hesistant, because it's a different medium. But I was open to it, b/c I'm still drawing on eyebrows, still drawing lip liners, ....so it wasn't such a jump or change for me.

My best friend , Joseph Hanten, was a NYC makeup artist at the time. He was a working makeup artist, and he helped to bridge my one dimensional artistic abilities to the three dimensional world of beauty. It helped tremendously. He also taught me about the business of beauty, putting a portfolio together, and how to best market myself. Whether it was a composite card of your work , or testing to make sure that you have work in your book to speak to clients -all of these things helped to guide my career, once I began to take it seriously.

I had been here for 2 years working at a cosmetic counter, and within that time, I started assisting other makeup artists ...taking it seriuosly, and really seeing where this would take me. Little did I know, while assisting a makeup artist at a fashion show, that Naomi Campbell was watching me work.

WOW!

I know, but I always say that you have to be in it to win it. So whether I was working on her or not, that wasn't the BIG break. The big break is showing up to do your best. Someone is going to take notice. She called me behind the cosmetic counter, and asked me to work with her on one of my first big assignments, People's Magazine- Most Beautiful People Issue. That was kinda the beggining of my professional career.

WOW!

.....I left out all the parts about ...me getting my apartment broken into 3 times , the air mattress, going to work and getting fired, getting on unemployment to help to bridge my free lance career from a day-to-day job (steady check) to a free lance career ,......I left all that out (laugh). So I dont know, if it's quite WOW - worthy (laugh).

So it was a long journey until you got up to that point...

Well, I was 19 though. I moved to New York when I was 17, ...fell on my tail in NY, and moved back home. But during that time, I had met a few people within the industry ...worked at the counter..met great people...worked with other artists...it was interesting, and fun for me. So when I moved back home to Chicago, Naomi Simms Cosmetics called me, and said," that we have a position opening in Manhattan. Would you like to come interview for it?" And it was always my dream to come back to New York, but of course, this time with a job. So I got the job, and I moved back when I was 19. Stayed behind the counter 2 years, an I've been free lancing ever since.

Most interesting counter experience?

The cosmetic counter was wonderful, b/c being in New York, you run into so many people. You deal with real women, but you also deal with a lot of makeup artists searching for their kits. And because Naomi Simms was one of the leaders in doing olive and gold toned foundations, thanks to Byron Barnes, so many makeup artists and models would have to come to this single location to purchase makeup. So I had everything- from real women to professionals shopping at the counter. It was a wonderful opportunity for me.

Who’s been your favorite client to date? Or can you really say?

Sure, there are always favorites.. who often have contributed the most to your career, and your learning experience about business...who are such examples of multi-dimensional careers. I work with Iman, Queen Latifah, Vanessa Williams, and Tyra Banks. When you look at these women, they're synonymous for multi-branding - they're singers, acters, dancers, talk show hosts, models- they can do it all. I never learned as much as having worked with those women.

When I think of a favorite, I would say Vanessa Williams. She's my longest running client- 15 years. I've been to the Super-Bowl, grammy's, Oscars, commercials , L'Oreal, ...I've done everything with her. And she's done so much, and conquered so much with grace. So intelligent and to have 4 children , and being an example and teaching me how to balance both professional life and personal life. She does it so well, and make sit seem so effortless.

Other favorites- Iman, such a style icon. So beautiful, graceful, and such a wondeful business women as well. Tyra Banks...it's really hard to choose when you work with the .....

..... best of the best...

...Yeah! What you really end up liking them for, are their attributes that are personal. Knowing them as friends , and not just seeing them as celebrities. Seeing them as real women who take care of their husbands, and take care of their kids...who come to birthday parties, and are my theater buddies...those are the highlights for our relationships, and make me like them more. Not just because they're fabulous entertainers or beautiful women.

How do you initiate a makeover? Do you ask preliminary questions about the person’s general style or do you just go FINE- free- style and execute what look you feel would look best on the person?

Both. I don't consider it a makeover. I would probably call it a makeup session. I would like to think that it's a collective effort, and that I'm chosent to do what I do best. So most people kinda know what my look is, it's classic. Something that I can look back 10 years from now, and still say that it's beautiful. I'm not very trendy, and I have a very distinct hand. Most of my friends wills say," I can tell you did her." It's kind of a laugh, it's my signature. It's not something that I try to do.

But when I approach a new client, I always ask what it is that their looking for. I've been working with Queen Latifah a lot lately, and she will often say, " I want really dewey, shiney skin. I want to look natural, but I want beautiful long lashes. That's easy to acheive. I'm flexible. At the end of the day, it will always look like something that I like b/c I'm doing it. It's almost like me asking you to sign your name 10 different ways. It's still going to be a basic, consistent thread in that. So whether it's my foundation, powder, or brow, ..whether it's mascara or a nude lip, it's still got a little bit of me in it.

I heard that you were once working on a cosmetic line of your own. Is this true and what’s in the making?

I've been working on cosmetic lines for a very long time. I've had many contracts, and many conversations about it, but I have yet to find the right partner. Ten years ago, I released "Fine Beauty", and that was my entree into consumer's homes. People that didn't study makeup or know that I was working with Vanessa or Brandy, had a chance to see what my life was like as a makeup artist, and also learn how to apply makeup. I've always enjoyed giving information.
I just finished an instructional dvd, Basics of Beauty, that comes out in May. Creating product is wonderful, but until you learn how to apply makeup and you're comfortable with it, ...and feel empowered to wear a look, you're not going to approach the counter. You can't keep throwing great product at women, when they don't know how to use them. We don't have a great history of having cosmetics, so education is crucial in creating a cosmetic line.
So offering a book and a dvd, showing step-by-step, how to beautify yourself at home and make the most out of your cosmetics are really important items to have.

My love for chemistry is evolved around the formulation of cosmetics. Each month I will include instructions and tips on how to formulate similar batches of your favorite brand -products, along with features and benefits of key ingredients in your compound.

During the harsh winter times, foot and lip scrubs are easy remedies to get your pout and twinkle toes back in shape. Vigorously apply your scrub with circular motions. Rinse off with water, and apply a thick moisturizer, or body butter.
